What is Shea butter?
It is a fat that is extracted from the nut of the Shea tree
'Shea' refers to the tree itself in the language of Mali. Other names are Karite or Ori.
Scientific name: Butyrospermum parkii or Vitellaria Nilotica
Origin: It grows widely in West Africa, but also in east africa - Ghana, Senegal, Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Benin, Togo and Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia amongst others.
A Shea tree has to grow to grow between 8 and 15 years before the nuts can be harvested. The Shea tree grows on land that is prone to drought. The Shea tree is also called by some the tree of life.
After the nuts are harvested, they are par boiled.
After the nuts are harvested, they are par boiled.
The good nuts are then cracked, fried/roasted and ground/milled, either using a mortar and pestle or grinding it between 2 stones it is also done by milling in a machine at times.
It is then mixed with water and they stir it by hand until the butter rises to the top, then they separate the butter floating on top into another dish.
They then boil this floating butter until the oil keeps rising to the top and scoop it off. What is scooped off is this wonder butter called Shea butter.
Shea butter acts as an emollient, it coats the skin and hair for intense moisturization, nourishment and protection.
Its also known as womens gold because it provides an income for so many women and it is so healing.
On hair its a moisturizer as well and is excellent for naturally thick, dry, kinky, curly, afro hair. Its promotes growth and prevents breakage and lubricates scalp.
It could also be used for cooking food and maintaining wood and leather. From wooden kitchen utensils to shoe polish. It is also used in candle making. Shea butter is very versatile, it has many uses, but my favourite is as a skincare product.
The first Shea butter I received smelt amazing, but has a very grainy texture so I was not too happy with it. The second time round I got smooth soft Shea butter, but the smell was not as pleasing.

After whipping it up I was more than happy with the texture and once it came into contact with my skin the smell disappeared. I love it. I made some for myself and some to sell.
